This opinion piece was also a promotion of social capital. At first they are showing how unhappy people are that during the recession period, immigrants were not greatly affected and bounced back quickly, getting more and more jobs than native born workers, but then it is counteracted. Quoting an expert, they give logical reasons as to why this might be happening, and how even though it seems that the immigrants are not getting affected, they are still greatly affected and in worse conditions than those native born. I feel like it promotes social capital, because it is attempting bringing the illegal immigrants, who are constantly being bagged on, and the angry native born people, together.

In this article I believe that as far as social capital, social networks would result is civic engagement. I also believe that there was a use of bonding as well as bridging. In the article they are mainly reviewing percentages of polls that were taken, and sharing statistics to the public, coming up with the conclusion that most voters would rather have an immigration reform rather than just kick everyone out. While stating the statistics, it showed us how the voters are siding ... More »

This story is being looked at through a geographical lens. This is happening mainly in Texas, or at least that is where people are protesting against it, because those are where the most arrests & deportations have been made. Also it is obviously be told through a racial lens as well. Even though it is speaking about all illegal immigrants, it seems to be focused on the Hispanic element. The Latinos are the ones who are speaking up and voicing their opinions on the matter, and the ... More »

Did the article explain complexities of the issue? Yes the article explained Lou Dobb’s past claims and what should be done to those who have hired or have harbored illegal immigrants as workers. Did the article answer depth of understanding of the issue? Not really, it didn’t show me anything new about immigration other than how Lou Dobb’s may or may not have hired illegal workers to work at his stables. Yes it was a strong opinion piece with lots of evidence and clearly ... More »

Did the article explain complexities of the issue? Yes the article did explain complexities of the issue. The author went into detail in explaining what was going with immigration deportation and why these numbers are so high. Did the article answer depth of understanding of the issue? This was a good article and it did give many details and evidence supporting the claims, but it could have used a little bit more clarity and organization to help understand the depth of it. I ... 1)Did the article explain complexities of the issue? No it did not, it was a good short article but more examples and more credible evidence could have been given, perhaps and expert opinion. 2)Did the article answer depth of understanding of the issue? It helped with my understanding of why economists believe the recession is over but at the same time there wasn’t much depth. It was a short article, and the author could have extended it a bit to add more detail and complexities. 3)Did the article clarify any questions you had about the issue or did it raise more? It clarified my question of whether the recession is over or not. Economists truly believe that it is over, and everything is getting better. Although it is true ... More »

Did the article explain complexities of the issue? Yes, the article explained the situation with a sufficient amount of details and background. The audience was told how long the Irish woman was planning to be away, and how she kept to her word, yet still faced immigration issues when she returned, resulting in getting her green card confiscated. Did the article answer depth of understanding of the issue? I believe it did offer depth, but it could have offered more, there was still some unclear reasons as to why Bridie Murphy’s case needed to go to court when she clearly was given instruction given to her by the US Citizen and Immigration Services. Did the article clarify any questions you had about the issue or did it raise ... More »
