I am having difficulty with this concept. I applaud the idea behind the effort, but I fail to understand how the NewsTrust effort supports the evolution of what is becoming the "new media". I would prefer a project that addresses the needs of the community in advancing its culture. Certainly good news reporting is a part of that, but for instance how do you address the recent report that says that people spend 60 seconds a day reading the news on their smart phones? The news reporting may be great, but unless journalists start examining the ecosystem that they have to work in and start figuring out how good journalism fits into that habitat, these very valid projects could turn out to be meaningless to the news consumer in the ... I found this to be very valuable hyperlocal journalism. It really shows how City Springs is a microcosm of the educational issues we face in educating children of the lower-middle and lower economic classes in Baltimore, and urban centers around the nation. It could have gone a little more in depth into the status of Direct Instruction at the school. I would have liked to know if the principal is making enforcement of that model part of her vision for change, and if so, whether she is facing pushback from teachers, etc.
My interested to learn more about how Direct Instruction is working in City Schools. From what I have read, it is the only model that has shown reproducible evidence of academic improvement in students from low-income backgrounds. Seems like a reasonably balanced story. It's sad that our city government can't get its act together enough to avoid this type of situation. What's going on with SRB? I feel like I was really excited for her as mayor in 2010. Now I feel like she's trying to fly under the radar or something. Maybe I'm just not paying attention enough. Certain folks' support for Rolley intrigues me, but so far I haven't been overly excited by him either. I might like to see them work together. We need someone like Corey Booker, but that's probably one in a million.

I actually liked the shortness of this story. That said, it would be nice to see a longer, locally-sourced piece listing the legislators for and against this measure. I am certainly in favor of it, as it seems sad that someone with cancer suffering from chemo treatments who finds their appetite improved by marijuana would have to go to a lawbreaking drug dealer.

Belinda Conaway: A Question Of Residence
I like stories that draw your attention to an issue but with less emotion and more solid facts/evidence; while the author does include photos and links, it felt more like an attack but given the publication is named The Mobtown Shank...I guess that was done on purpose?!
This story obviously points out a few of the ever expanding list of misdeeds perpetrated by our elected officials but also a larger one – ignorance! Very often, and as pointed out in the story (and I have been guilty myself) votes are cast based on the familiarity of a name and wonder why our situations remain unchanged.
