Measured by the way many news organizations cover themselves (not very well), this story ranks high. It describes what happened to its CEO clearly (forced out) as opposed to inaccurately (stopped down to spend more time with family/pursue future opportunties, etc. etc.).

Important subject addressed by a journalist who is well-informed on the issues. (This review is a bit unusual for me to write because I know the author, Tom Regan, and have spoken with him about the issues he discusses). I found the piece helpful in a couple of respects. I was unaware of the new sites he mentions, and the ever more disturbing lengths to which anonymity is being taken on the Web. I was aware of wilileaks.org, but was unaware of the legal controversy surrounding it. The piece left me wanting more in a couple of respects. Recognizing that free speech can cause harm as well as benefit, what are some ways that harm can be minimized by Web publishers? By consumers of the information? By people who find themselves ... As someone never accused of sesquipedalian tendencies in my word choice, I admired that, among other things, about Mr. Buckley. And appreciated Douglas Martin's appreciation of that, among other things, in his obit. I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone far more conservative than I am to see if I detected a liberal flavor to the Times obit, but found none. I looked on Timeswatch.com and Technorati to see if anyone in the blogosphere has critiqued The Times' coverage of his death, but found nothing so far. From what I can see, this is an extraordinarily well reported and well written obit. I'd be especially interested to hear reactions to this obit from conservatives who have alleged liberal bias on the part of The Times ... More »

Raises a good issue but falls short in couple of respects. Doesn't reflect much of the point of view of editors and publishers who believe endorsing is a good idea. And doesn't enable readers/users to have their say about it, unless I'm missing a link to feedback on the column.

Nicely done piece. A reporting approach that worked especially well: Before he interviewed Gibson, Garreau e-mailed Kevin Kelly and Bruce Sterling and asked them what they'd ask Gibson. Incorporating their questions (and perspectives) added interesting layers to the piece.

Good story with a big hole: in a story about a house that won't sell, doesn't the reader expect to find the price of the house? If it's a sliding scale, story at least needs to address the issue.

Interesting piece, but unclear whether this was a chat in an elevator, a recorded interview or what. Not really clear whether the reporter got these quoes from Sulzberger directly or whether they were uttered during a session at Davos.
