This story entirely hinders social capital. This story is strictly from the perspective of one family. Although it does show the idea of Latinos being divided it does not show it in perspective to the general public. One married couple being divided is not story worthy nor does it contribute to the social capital. The idea is on the right track but failed in its execution. Had the article showed more than one family, or even better, unrelated Latinos the story would have ... More »

In terms of social capital this article both hinders and promotes. The article promotes social capital in a bonding sense because it creates a common argument for Democrats, or other political parties, against Republicans. It however hinders social capital because it doesn't create a forum for an in-depth conversation regarding the matter. The author doesn't give much background on the subject matter and only quotes one source. Although the author hits on good points he does not ... More »

This story tends to avoid fault lines. I believe it was written in the most unbiased manner possible. As a reader of course I am affected by my fault lines. My views on Arizona’s immigration law seep through in my reading of the article. However, the article does an excellent job of staying focused on the issues, giving excellent context and quoting a wide variety of creditable sources. The article is framed in political and legal frame. It covers the issue of whether the ... More »

This article is certainly affected by the fault lines of the author. Even though the article is an Opinion article the author does not attempt to present a fair or educational argument. Her race is what seems to drive her argument. At the end of the article she also attacks Obama, allowing her personal political views come into play in a way that does not reinforce or help her argument. The article starts out well with background but quickly digresses when the author begins to ... More »

This article is framed using the institutional and a bit of personal framing. It covers the points the judge made in her ruling as to why she was haulting the law. The article is quite harsh in its attack and although I personally agree with the author on the subject I would have preferred a more eloquent manner of speech. The author does do a good job of backing up the points with logical argument and makes good use of the quote she used. She makes a call to the reader to ... More »

This article is framed in a legal frame. It references the fact that the agreements were made with the states and local governments do not have the power to overrule that. It could certainly go into a little more detail on that subject. The article is short and doesn't give a lot of background or insight. There is one brief sentence regarding why a few cities are attempting to opt out of the program but doesn't go into detail of why it could lead to racial profiling. It does ... More »

The article is entirely based on opinions shared by locals and focuses solely on one incident. I don't believe they author took the time to delve into the situation to determine if this was an isolated incident or if this is truly a prevalent problem.

A. The article did not explain the complexities of the issue. The article could have certainly delved into the multitude of controversies surrounding the topic. B. The article did not offer any depth of understanding. Although I do believe the article was simply an update as to what is happening with the case it should have given more context, more development is certainly needed to help the reader understand. C. The only question the article answered is when the case will be ... More »

1. The article did a fairly good job at explaining the complexities of the issue. The reporter showed the argument form both the Republican and Democratic sides, citing different senators and giving a clear view of why each thinks the bill did not pass. 2. Yes the article did offer depth of understanding. The DREAM act was explained as well as the fact that it has been tacked onto the defense bill and what a brief snippet on a few other points in the defense bill. 3. The article ... More »
