Reading this news article was very helpful because the enterprise piece that I am going to be writing is very similar to this particular article on Islamic schools and education. In this article, the author discusses one Islamic school in particular, or the Averroes Institute, which is a school for Muslim Americans. The author discusses how the school provides a different take on education, as the students receive both an American and Islamic education. The author also explains how the implementation of this type of education is helping promote acceptance among students of all religions, while attempting to get rid of prejudice. At schools like the Averroes Institute, the students are able to feel comfortable in their own skin ... More »

In this particular article, the author indicates that George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, has been portrayed by news outlets as a “white Hispanic.” As a result of this, many individuals have started to assume that George Zimmerman, a “white” individual, killed Trayvon Martin, who was black. Although Zimmerman would consider himself as just a Hispanic, news outlets used the word white in order to beef up their story and make it seem as though the crime that occurred was a result of a “white racist,” which has caused a lot of conflict. This goes to show that information reported by news organizations can have an immense effect on the public and the way that identity is shaped in the public, ... More »

This particular news article can be related to the many conversations that we have had in class, especially relating to the code of ethics for journalism and reporting. This article shares several accounts where false information is being posted on what are usually recognized as credible sources. For example, PBS, which might be recognized as a credible news source by many, put their credibility at risk when they suggested that the rap artist, Tupac Shakur, was not dead and was residing in New Zealand. Although many might have realized that this was actually a lie or the result of an online hack, it has become evident that it has become so easy for false information to be posted by credible news organizations, which could result ... In the news article, “Mukit Hossain, Muslim activist in Northern Virginia, dies,” the author, Emma Brown, does a good job at structuring the article. Particularly, by using specific types of background information to explain Mukit Hossain, the author does a good job of informing readers about why Hossain was an important man and how he made positive contributions to his community during the time that he lived. Specifically, readers learn that Mukit Hossain was an activist who was interested in boosting the influence of Muslim Americans within politics, especially after the September 11 terrorist attacks. An example of this type of background information can be viewed in the article when the author writes, “…he spoke at ... More »

In the news article, “First African-American pastor of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church departs,” the writer, Sarah Whitman, does a very good job at structuring the piece and using a variety of sources. One thing I liked about the structure of this news article was that the nut graf was easy to identify. Whitman starts off by introducing pastor Kevin James and his arrival at the Palma Ceia United Methodist Church in 2005. After sharing a few of his accomplishments during his time at Palma Ceia, Whitman writes, “Now the 51-year-old pastor is moving on to serve another congregation. On Sunday, he will deliver his last sermon in South Tampa.” It is clear that this is the nut graf because the article is about Kevin ... More »

For this particular NewsTrust review, I analyzed the story “Blacks in South L.A. have a bleaker jobs picture than in 1992.” There are multiple areas in this article where important facts are included. In the third paragraph, the author uses statistics in order to reveal the unemployment rate. Specifically, the author states, “In two areas of South Los Angeles- Florence Graham and Westmont- unemployment is almost 24%. Back in 1992, it was 21% in Florence Graham and 17% in Westmont.” This set of statistics and use of facts is important because the author reveals how bad the unemployment rate currently is in Los Angeles. A second area where the author included facts was in the sixth paragraph of the ... More »

The news article “Suit alleges feds profiled Muslim Americans at border searches” is about Muslim-Americans who filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government because they felt that they were being inappropriately searched at the U.S.-Canada border. The Muslim Americans who filed this lawsuit believed that the unfair searching continuously took place as a result of their religious and ethnic background. There are a few specific areas where background or context is included in the article that give depth and a better understanding to the story. The first area of the news article where the use of background can be identified is located in the second paragraph. At this particular spot, the author writes, “Three other ... More »

Several news values have been reflected in the news article, “How to raise African-American boys like Trayvon Martin to be careful, but not paranoid.” One of the first news values that could be identified in this particular article was the value of impact. Clearly, this article will have a strong impact on the African-American population in general, especially those with children. After the shooting of Trayvon Martin, many parents have started questioning whether or not their methods in raising their children are efficient. At one point in the article, the author tells the story of one African-American male who had “Just turned 22 and was now out of the most vulnerable demographic group-African-American males between 13 ...
