    About MyNews

    What is MyNews? MyNews is a personal news filter that gathers the news you care about, all in one place. This free service from NewsTrust lets you create your own news page by following your favorite topics, sources, friends and feeds &ndash including people you follow on Facebook and Twitter.

    Your personal MyNews page is updated continuously with stories recommended by your community, on issues that matter to you. It's a great way to keep up with the news, with a focus on stories that are relevant to you and people you trust.

    MyNews is in public beta, with more features coming soon. If you like MyNews, please invite your friends and spread the word in your community.

    How do I find MyNews? To find MyNews, first login on the main NewsTrust site. Click on "MY NEWS" in the top navbar of any page on NewsTrust (or on MyNews at the top right corner of any page, just below your name). This will take you to your personal MyNews page.

    How do I set up MyNews? It only takes a few minutes to set up your personal MyNews page, by adding your interests in the right sidebar, with these four easy steps:

    1. Follow your favorite topics – add subjects and topics that interest you.
    2. Follow your trusted sources – add publications that you like.
    3. Follow people you trust – add reviewers you find interesting.
    4. Follow more feeds – including your own Facebook or Twitter feeds.

    Each time you add another item you want to follow, your list will update automatically to show stories that match your interests. To stop following any item in the MyNews sidebar, click its button.

    When you're done adding your favorite topics, sources, members or feeds on the right sidebar, click on "Settings" to adjust your settings and update your list, as described below.

    How do I follow topics in MyNews? You can follow subjects and topics that interest you in five different ways:

    • Pick a subject – Under "My Topics" in the right column, click any of five subject areas (World, U.S., etc.), to make stories on these subjects appear in your list.
    • Follow a featured topic – Click the "Follow our Featured Topics" button to view a menu of our most popular topics on NewsTrust, and then click on the button next to the topic(s) you want to add to your list (you can also click on "All Topics" to see more topic in our pop-up menu).
    • Type a topic name – In the text box at the bottom of the topics panel, type the names of topics you want to follow (e.g., Obama, Health Care), to make stories on these topics appear in your list.
    • Follow a topic – On a subject or topic page, click on the yellow button called "Follow this topic."

    Each time you add a topic, your list will update automatically to show stories that match that topic. To remove a topic, click its button.

    How do I follow sources in MyNews? You can follow sources that interest you in three different ways:

    • Pick a trusted source from our menu – Click the "Follow our Trusted Sources" button to view a menu of the top-rated sources on NewsTrust, then click on the button next to the source(s) you want to add.
    • Type a source name – In the text box at the bottom of the sources panel, type the name of the sources whose stories you want to appear in your list. If a source is not in our database, its stories will not appear in your list (to request that a source be added to our database, email ).
    • Follow a source – On a source's page, click on the yellow button called "Follow this source."

    Each time you follow a source, your list will update automatically to show stories that match that source. To remove a source, click its button.

    How do I follow people in MyNews? You can follow NewsTrust members you like in a variety of ways, using the "My Network" panel in right the sidebar of the MyNews page (as well as your My Network page, see My Network FAQ below):

    • Follow your Facebook friends – Click the "Find friends from Facebook" button to view a menu of your Facebook friends who are also NewsTrust members; then click on the checkboxes next to the member(s) you want to follow. (see Facebook FAQ below)
    • Follow your Twitter contacts – Click the "Find people I follow on Twitter" button to view a menu of people you follow on Twitter who are also NewsTrust members; then click on the checkboxes next to the member(s) you want to follow. (see Twitter FAQ below)
    • Pick a trusted member from our menu – Click the "Follow our Trusted Members" button to view a menu of recent NewsTrust reviewers with a member level of 3 or higher, and then click on the button next to the member(s) you want to add.
    • Type a member name – In the text box under "Follow our Trusted Members", type the name of the NewsTrust member whose stories you would like to see in your list.
    • Follow a member – On a member's profile page, click on the yellow button called "Follow this member."

    Each time you follow another member, your list will update automatically to show stories which that member has posted or reviewed. To remove a member, click its button.

    How do I follow feeds in MyNews? NewsTrust is tracking hundreds of smart feeds which you can add to your MyNews page. Our smart feeds collect thousands of news stories each day from trusted sources, popular news sites and social networks – as well as some of the greatest minds in "link journalism." MyNews also lets you follow your own Facebook or Twitter feeds, to track recommended links from your friends and trusted people on these social networks.

    You can follow feeds with MyNews in a variety of ways:

    • Follow news from your Facebook Feed – Click the "Follow news from my Facebook Feed" button to fetch any news-related links recommended by your friends on Facebook. (see Facebook FAQ below)
    • Follow news from your Twitter Feed – Click the "Follow news from my Twitter Feed" button to to fetch any news-related links recommended by people you follow on Twitter. (see Twitter FAQ below)
    • Pick a smart feed from our menu – Click the "Follow our Smart Feeds" button to view a menu of all the smart feeds we track on NewsTrust; then click on the button next to the feed(s) you want to follow. To recommend a smart feed, .
    • Type a feed name – In the text box provided, type the name of the feeds whose stories you want to appear in your list. To recommend a smart feed, .
    • Follow a feed – On a feed page, click on the yellow button called "Follow this feed."
    Each time you add a feed, your MyNews page will update automatically to show stories that match that feed. To remove a feed, click its button.

    How do I adjust my settings for MyNews? You can easily change the settings of your own MyNews page by clicking on the "Settings" button at the top of that page (right below the MyNews logo). This opens a "Settings" panel with drop-down menus and checkboxes that let you customize your list, by changing the number of stories, their story dates, story types and other settings. These settings can be edited at any time, but you need to click the yellow "Update" button to update your list.

    • Number of Stories – Select how many stories you want to see in your list.
    • Story Date – Adjust the date range of stories shown in your list. Increasing the number of days will show more stories in your list, but they may not be as current.
    • Story Status – Change the number of reviews and overall rating a story must have to appear in your list.
    • Source Status – Adjust the trust level a source must have for its stories to appear in your list.
    • Source Medium – Filter your list to show only stories from a particular media type (e.g., newspapers, TV or blogs).
    • Number of Matches – To appear in your list, a story must match at least one of the topics, sources, members or feeds you're following on MyNews. Raising the number of matches will display stories that better match your interests, but may result in fewer stories in your list.
    • Who can see my MyNews page – Control who has access to your MyNews page and RSS feed. There are two levels of access:
      • Everyone (public) – Your MyNews page and MyNews RSS feed are avaliable to non-NewsTrust members. If you do not want non-members to view your MyNews page or RSS feed, then select Members Only.
      • Members Only – Only NewsTrust members can visit your MyNews page, and they have to be logged in to gain access. Your MyNews RSS feed will not be available. (This is the default setting.)
    • Hide stories I've reviewed – Remove from MyNews any story you've already reviewed (checked by default).
    • Hide stories I've read – Remove from MyNews any story you've already read (unchecked by default).
    • Get MyNews by email – Subscribe to a daily email with the first 20 stories on your MyNews page (unchecked by default – see more about this email in our Member FAQ).

    After you've adjusted your settings, click the yellow "Update" button to update your list.

    How can I bookmark ("star") stories I like in MyNews? To narrow down your list and keep track of stories that interest you, click on the "Star" icon next to any story title you like; then click on the "Starred" button (next to "Settings") to see only stories you've "starred" in MyNews. To remove a story from this "Starred" list, click on its yellow "Star" button again. To see your full list again, click on the "Starred" button one more time.

    How can I filter the types of stories I see MyNews? To narrow down the types of stories listed in MyNews, click the "Show" drop-down menu (next to the "Starred" button). You can filter your list in a variety of ways:

    • Show only news stories
    • Show only opinions
    • Show only stories from mainstream sources
    • Show only stories from independent sources
    Each time you select a different option, your MyNews page will update automatically to show stories that match your selection. To see all story types again, click on "All".

    How can I see stories for just one of my interests in MyNews? To see stories that only match one of your interests, click on the "Filter" button that appears when you rollover topics, sources, people or feeds in the right sidebar (it has a little 'eye' icon, right next to the 'X' button for each button). Each time you click on a different interest, your MyNews page will update automatically to show only stories that match that interest. To remove that filter and see all listed stories again, click on that button one more time.

    How can I sort stories in MyNews? To sort the stories listed in MyNews, click the "Sort" drop-down menu (below to the "Starred" button). You can sort your list in a variety of ways:

    • Sort by relevance – This setting surfaces stories that seem most relevant for you, weighing your interests and recommendations from trusted members (default).
    • Sort by matches – This setting surfaces stories that have the most matches with your interests.
    • Sort by rating – This setting surfaces stories with the highest rating.
    • Sort by date – This setting surfaces the most recent stories in your list.
    Each time you select a different option, your MyNews page will be automatically sorted based on your selection.

    How can I get more info about stories in MyNews? To get more info about stories in your list, click "Show Info" under "Settings." If a story's source, topic, reviewer or feed matches one on your interests, it will be highlighted in green. You will also see a collection of icons for each match. To hide this story info, click on "Hide info." You can view the additional info for a specific story by clicking the "matches" box in the bottom right corner of each story on your MyNews page.

    How can I authorize NewsTrust to follow friends and news from my Facebook Feed? To follow people and/or news items from your Facebook Feed, your NewsTrust and Facebook accounts need to be connected. If you have not yet connected your account to Facebook, you will get a chance to do this when you click on one of these buttons in MyNews:

    • Click on "Find friends from Facebook" in MyNews to get a list of Facebook friends you can follow on NewsTrust (see My Network FAQ).
    • Click on "Follow news from my Facebook Feed" in MyNews to track news links recommended by your friends on Facebook (see My Feeds FAQ above).

    You can also connect to Facebook by clicking on 'Facebook Connect' when you sign up, log in, or go to My Account.

    Once you are connected and have authorized NewsTrust to transfer data from Facebook, we carefully restrict how that data is used, to protect your privacy and that of your friends &ndash and to comply with Facebook's terms of service. Here's how this works:

    • You can only follow friends from Facebook who are already NewsTrust members.
    • We only feature news-related links from your Facebook Feed &ndash and do not show names or comments from your friends.
    • Your Facebook Feed is only visible to you on NewsTrust, and we only show that feed for a limited time.
    • We do not store anything in our database other than web links from your Facebook Feed.

    To stop data transfers from Facebook, go to My Account and unlink your Facebook account from NewsTrust.

    How can I authorize NewsTrust to follow people and news from my Twitter Feed? To follow people and/or news items from your Twitter Feed, your NewsTrust and Twitter accounts need to be connected. If you have not yet connected your account to Twitter, you will get a chance to do this when you click on one of these buttons in MyNews:

    • Click on "Find people I follow on Twitter" in MyNews to get a list of people you follow on Twitter who are also NewsTrust members (see My Network FAQ).
    • Click on "Follow news from my Twitter Feed" in MyNews to track news links recommended by people you follow on Twitter (see My Feeds FAQ above).

    You can also click on "Twitter Connect" in My Account to login to Twitter and connect it to NewsTrust. Once you are connected and have authorized NewsTrust to transfer data from Twitter, we carefully restrict how that data is used, to protect your privacy and that of people you follow &ndash and to comply with Twitter's terms of service. Here's how this works:

    • You can only follow people from Twitter who are already NewsTrust members.

    About My Network

    What is My Network? My Network is the group of people you follow on NewsTrust. You can keep track of them, along with your own followers, on your special Network page.

    Your Network page includes the following sections:

    • Network Activity – A list of the most recent reviews, posts and likes from members you follow, sorted by date.
    • Following – A list of all NewsTrust members you follow, sorted alphabetically (includes their latest activity).
    • Followers – A list of all NewsTrust members who follow you, sorted alphabetically (includes their latest activity).
    • Expand your Network – A panel in the right sidebar that lets you follow (or unfollow) more NewsTrust members.

    Click on the tabs for Network Activity, Following or Followers to view these sections in the main column of this page.

    How do I find my Network page? To find your Network page, first login on the main NewsTrust site. Click on "My Network" at the top right corner of any NewsTrust page, right below your name. This will take you to your personal Network page. You can also click on "My Network" on either your member profile or MyNews page.

    How do I add people to My Network? To expand your network and follow more NewsTrust members, use the "Expand My Network" panel in the right sidebar of the My Network page. It works just like the My Network panel in MyNews (see My Network FAQ above).

    The "Expand My Network" panel gives you four different ways to add people to your network:

    • Follow your Facebook friends – Click the "Find friends from Facebook" button to view a menu of your Facebook friends who are also NewsTrust members; then click on the checkboxes next to the member(s) you want to follow. (see Facebook FAQ above)
    • Follow your Twitter contacts – Click the "Find people I follow on Twitter" button to view a menu of people you follow on Twitter who are also NewsTrust members; then click on the checkboxes next to the member(s) you want to follow. (see Twitter FAQ above)
    • Pick a trusted member from our menu – Click the "Follow our Trusted Members" button to view a menu of recent NewsTrust reviewers with a member level of 3 or higher, and then click on the button next to the member(s) you want to add.
    • Type a member name – In the text box under "Follow our Trusted Members", type the name of the NewsTrust member whose stories you would like to see in your list.

    How do I remove people from My Network? To stop following a member listed in My Network, simply click its button. You can do this either in the "Network Activity," "Following" or "Followers" sections &ndash or in the panel in the right sidebar of the My Network page.
